Great Movie Scenes #021: Captain America-The Winter Soldier (2014)

SPOILER WARNING! This moment showcased in Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a major spoiler. So if you haven’t seen this yet then don’t see what happens below. Although if you are a major fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe then you know what I’m about to mention.

As a fan of comic book movies I am burned out. I never saw Batman v. Superman, I won’t be seeing the third Captain America movie, and apart from some different offerings (Doctor Strange, Black Panther) I am completely uninterested in the big outings by Disney and WB. One of the first films to make me have this mindset was The Winter Soldier. Not a bad movie by any means but it just didn’t hold my interest. I basically didn’t care what happened to anyone in this and considering it is a building block to another, major Avengers outing it should make me care.

But one moment won me over in a big way and it is Robert Redford’s death scene.  It was pretty fun seeing him come in to play the baddie. Cause apart from taking place in a superhero universe he is playing a straight man supervillain. However, and I have no idea if it was the Russo Brothers or one of the men in the army of writers, they made his final moment cheesy as hell. We all remember the late Garry Shandling uttering the immortal words of “Hail Hydra”. Well Redford got his time to shine and it would be the last he would ever utter in a Marvel movie. It’s stupid, it’s over the top, and it made me have a huge smile on my face. In a film where the stakes never got to me and was too serious at times this was the kind of tone I WISH this sequel sustained throughout. Out of context it is certainly going to be a moment fans of Robert Redford will be puzzled by in the distant future.
